Rice Storage Jar (Ulbong)

Made from fine split bejuco rattan, this container has a coiled construction: alternate rows of stitches are set in right and left oblique slant to develop its special shape. This basket may be hung or placed on the floor. Its shape might have been influenced by oriental ceramics, both in the splayed foot and the loops on the shoulder and narrow mouth (Lane 1986: 68).

According to Schadenberg, this basket is from the Sapao valley (inventory 1888, MVW archives). Typical for Ifugao, it is used far beyond this area for storing rice grains. Similar baskets, fabricated from rods, are used on the Indonesian Island of Lombok, there serving as storage for cooked rice. (Sri Kuhnt-Saptodewo and Eric Anderson 2009: 49)
