Shoulder Bag

This colorful bag exhibits a masterful control over the rattan, bamboo, nito and grass element, as it is split and rolled into tight cords. The rattans are natural light brown, dyed with red, or oiled and smoked to a brown color, the nito is natural brown or black, and the grass natural yellow. This type of colorful basketry plaiting is typical of the Pasila area of Kalinga and the adjacent area of Abra. Typically it can be found in the form of hats, walking sticks, and basket lids. The bag may have been used in ceremony and was carried by men. It may have been made to hold elements for betel chew, including areca palm nut, lime, and tobacco.
