Hat (Kaloyong)

Like the Bontoc men's hat here, this Kalinga basket cap was probably worn at the back rather than the top of the head. It may have been part of a ceremonial costume because of its color and cross embellishment at the top, decorated with feathers and plant leaves during more important occasions. Unlike in Bontoc, basket hats in Kalinga are less common. The cross design served both aesthetic and technological purposes, marking the point from which the weaving began. Moreover, the hat may have also contained the wearer's small possessions such as tobacco and matches or flint. (Ana Maria Theresa Labrador 2009: 49)
