Ceremonial Rice Basket (Ifugao)

Ceremonial rice basket; similar in shape to our box. Four strong rattan poles go straight 38cm from the ground, then 31cm outwards and upwards in the shape of a church. They serve as passive corner supports for the mesh of the basket. The square rattan frame (16.5cm) for the wicker base, which is braided diagonally at the edges and twill, is attached to the corner supports, 5cm from the wicker base, with wrapped rattan eyelets. On this base frame, the side walls between the straight corner supports are worked 31cm straight up, by braiding horizontal strips of the same material around passive vertical rattan strips in plain weave. At the upper end of these side walls, a second square rattan frame is attached to the outside of the mesh; Between the funnel-shaped corner supports from here, the trapezoidal upper side walls are made in the same mesh as the lower ones up to a height of 25cm, where in turn a square rattan frame (32cm) is attached, which is also fitted with a square rattan frame (36cm ) is connected with four wrapped rattan eyelets on each side. On one side of this uppermost frame there is a handle made of twisted rattan strips. On two corner supports, roughly in the middle of the basket, there is a wide (2.5 cm) band made of bark, which is intended as a carrying device over the head of the wearer.
