Manila – A Suburb with Early Street Light is an early photograph from the Philippines. The view pays attention to houses and streets where the local people lived and reveals similarities in subject matter with photographs from other parts of the Southeast Asian region, revealing a certain consistency in the European gaze. Despite there being only a few studios operating in Philippines, the photographs are generally difficult to identify due to a lack of scholarship. Some of the studios operating in Philippines include Felix Laureano, Albert Honnis, R Mayer, Francisco van Camp and Francisco Pertierra. This photograph likely originated from one of these studios.
