Manila – A Suburb of Manila with a Bamboo Bridge and Boats is an early photograph from the Philippines. The view pays attention to houses and streets where the local people lived. There were a few studios operating in the Philippines, including Felix Laureano, Albert Honnis, R Mayer, Francisco van Camp and Francisco Pertierra. This photograph likely originated from one of these studios. The print reveals similarities in subject matter with photographs from other parts of Southeast Asia, revealing a certain consistency in the European gaze on the region.
