Liberation Manila in Flames

Fernando Amorsolo is one of Philippine's best known realist painters. He is known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of light and painted mostly rustic scenes and pictures of Filipino countryside, utilizing a proportion and colour which he considered suitable for depicting the Filipino. This painting, which shows the destruction from the American take-over of Manila during Second World War in 1945, is thematically a rare genre of painting by Amorsolo and is a departure  from his typical romanticized countryside landscapes and figurative subjects. Despite this, the techniques and painterly approach is distinctively Amorsolo as can be seen through the academic formality in composition and the use of austere palette of warm earthy hues.
