Not Titled (Philippine Woman)

Not Titled (Philippine Woman) is an early photograph from the Philippines. The view pays attention to houses and streets where the local people lived. Philippine photographs are generally difficult to identify due to the lack of scholarship. There were a few studios operating in the Philippines including Felix Laureano, Albert Honnis, R Mayer, Francisco van Camp and Francisco Pertierra. This photograph likely originated from one of these studios. This print of a woman posing with the banana tree, reveals similarities in subject matter with photographs from other parts of the Southeast Asia, revealing a certain consistency in the European gaze on the region.
