Figure (Bul-ul)

Inventory number SA 34565
Male wooden Bul-ul figure from the Kiangan region. The Bul-ul are also known as rice guards or rice gods, because they once ensured a good harvest, protected the rice granaries from pests and protected the rice stocks from being destroyed by all kinds of calamities. The arms are detachable and the hands positioned on the side seem to represent a dance movement of the traditional dance of the Ifugao. Text: Prof. Dr. Leah E. Abayao, Cordillera Studies Center, UP Baguio.
