Fur drum (Ifugao)

Sound box made of wood; slightly bulked, open on both sides, fluted. A skin covering over one end of the tube serves as a membrane, which is attached to the sound body by means of a 2 cm wide braided rattan ribbon. The rattan band is "sewn" to the sounding body with a strip of the same material by making a hole in every second ridge of the fluting. A small handle made of rattan is attached to the braided band. Open tube drums in the Ifugao are documented in the literature; however, they are always described as a simply hollowed-out piece of wood. Since the present piece is a new production, the suspicion arises that this instrument was specially made for the souvenir trade.
