Funerary Stele

Islamic-influenced post that plugs into the horse's back.

Usage:
The male stelae are different from the female stelae in order to facilitate the entry of the deceased into the other world. "According to Thomas Kiefer and Clifford Sather, to reach the world of their ancestor the Sama Dilaut must metamorphose and, developing this idea, one could even say that they must be reborn" (Benitez-Johannot). Thus the male tombs refer to the phallus while the female tombs carry within them the motif of fertility. Douglas Newton suggests the hypothesis that grave markers could be regarded as the "vessels of the dead" bound for the Beyond.

Vernacular name: Sunduk
