Velo de mujer (Lambong)

Jose Rizal in his packing list and letter to Bastian in 1888 calls this a Velo de Mujer ( woman's veil) but puts in parentheses its local name "Lambong" = local word for a veil or long clothing/ gown/ robe.
The later notes from 1888 also indicate that this is "Belonging to the suit of a Tagalog woman. "
Some depictions of the Lambong are seen in 19th c paintings.
The upper right is wearing a pre-colonial veil/cloak called "lambong" which was originally unisex (see Boxer Codex + Velarde map vignette + 19th c. tipos). In the pre-colonial times the black one was called "inuwak" ("likened to a crow"), and in Spanish "cobija" "covering, veil, mantle".
Lambong were usually worn by men around the shoulder/crossbody and the women over their heads. Veils were considered "church clothes" same way hats were part of the men's ensemble.
