Knapsack

Knapsack, carrying basket ("bango"); made of rattan and tree bark; rectangular basket plaited of tree bark with rattan frame around bottom; braided bark straps to go over shoulders attached on each side to bottom and top corner; water-proof flap of tree bark with loose fibres on oustide folded over top of basket. 19thC(late)-20thC(early)
Curators comments:
This type of knapsack was traditionally used only by men, and was used either a) by the leader of a pig-hunting party and used to bring the dismembered quarry back to the village; b) used in a curing or status-display ceremonial; or c) used to carry a cloth shirt and tools to the fields.
