Cut section of tapa

Tapa cloth, rectangular, painted and stamped linear designs. Medium to medium-heavy tapa cloth with hand-painted and hand-stamped motifs in horizontal bands across width. Grain direction lengthwise. Use of bast fiber stitching as decorative element in pattern, and on borders, is unusual. Shape of cloth and surface decoration suggests Melanesian (Solomon Islands?) or West Polynesian manufacture.
