Stringed Instrument (Kusiyapi)

Instrument with two strings: one traditional, the other made of nylon (contemporary)

According to the collector, the instrument was bought in the region of Maguindanao and is named a ‘kutiyapi’. But referring to some boat lute experts,* the form of the instrument more hints at the island of Palawan where it would be called a kusiyapi. It even might originate from Sabah, the northern part of Borneo. Thus the name and origin of the boat lute still has to be verified.

The lute itself has two strings, one made of metal (maybe fishing line) and one made of nylon. At the head of the boat lute there are some fibres attached.

* From a discussion with Hans Brandeis, a well-known Philippine boat lute scholar and collector, May 2023.
