This particular axe, collected in a contact zone between the Kalinga and Bontok groups, shows Bontok influence on typical Kalinga style. Its wooden handle is decorated with brass bands and features a projecting point under which the first finger could be hooked, to keep the axe from slipping away, when carried blade down. Associated with headhunting, the axe of the Cordillera People is often referred to as "head axe;" in fact, it was not only a weapon but also a tool, used for chopping wood, clearing fields, and even cutting hair (Whittington 2009).
Driving its skewer into the ground, the axe head was stabilized to cut meat or hides. The axes of the Kalinga are slender and curved, those of the Bontok tend to be heavier, straight, and short (Whittington 2006).
