Planting Stick

This hollow planting stick is composed of two parts, held together with woven rattan rings. The pointed end was used to poke holes into the ground, while the major part of the bamboo tube held rice grains, ready to be dropped into the hole. The intricate pattern burnt into the surface of the stick is similar to Bontok tattoo designs (inventory 1887, MVW archives). (Oliver Moiseanu 2009: 54)
