Girdle (Palingtan)

Girdles of this kind were worn by women below their wrap around skirts. Slender pubic napkins, made from beaten bark cloth, were placed between the legs and attached to the girdle. ''As a rule the girdle and the cloute are not removed when bathing, as are the other garments" (Cole 1922: 438). According to the collector, this specimen originates from the rancheria Mayuman. It consists of a long string made from rattan, folded in 44 coils placed on top of each other. The string is a three-dimensional woven tube and has a rattan core inside. Twice, the girdle's coils are vertically connected with five additional elements, using a special plaiting. Rattan rods, integrated in these areas, ensure a certain stability. In between these connecting areas, light-colored strips ofleaves serve as embellishment. (Ursula Brandl-Straka 2009: 44)
