Wood Paddle

Paddle, shaped like an oar with a very short handle, raw wood. To wash clothes with. (Catalog)

Notes: "Paddle for washing clothes. In the smaller towns and villages a woman, a paddle, a little native made soap, and the river or lake constitute the laundry. Clothes are brought to the water. A flat smooth rock is found, on which the clothes are placed after being well soaked. Now the paddle is used energetically and some of the dirt disappears and the rest beaten into the clothes. Unfortunately this beating also means that all the buttons are either knocked off or broken" (Nathorst, catalogue)
