Cotton bag

Cotton bag used by women and decorated with the stylistic features of the bukidnon: decorative motifs made in different colored fabrics and applied embroideries. In the Philippines, as a complement to the clothing of both sexes, basketry, bark or cotton bags adorned with beads or metal were used, which were hung on the back or at the waist, and where spoons were kept, the necessary tools for smoking. tobacco or the ingredients for chewing betel leaves.

Provenance

The main nucleus of the collections of the Philippines and the Marianas and Carolinas Islands of the National Museum of Anthropology come from the exhibition that was held on these places in Madrid, with the naturalist Domingo Sánchez being responsible for the Commission in Manila. The exhibition opened on June 30, 1887 at the Palacio de la Minería -now the Palacio de Velázquez- and at the Palacio de Cristal in the Retiro Park. Then the objects went to the Overseas Library Museum, created in 1887 to house the objects of the Monographic Exhibition on the Philippines, Marianas and Carolinas and other later special and periodic products from the overseas colonies, and settling in the Palace of the Mining.

Bolsa de algodón usada por las mujeres y decorada con los rasgos estilísticos propios de los bukidnon: motivos decorativos realizados en telas de diferentes colores y bordados aplicados. En Filipinas como complemento a la indumentaria de ambos sexos se utilizaban bolsas de cestería, de corteza o de algodón adornadas con cuentas o metal que se llevaban colgadas a la espalda o en la cintura, y donde se guardaban las cucharas, el utillaje necesario para fumar tabaco o los ingredientes para mascar las hojas de betel.
