Figure (Bul-ul)

Inventory number SA 35782 a + b
A pair of bul-ul wooden figures, consisting of a man and a woman, seated on a carved base. During the rice harvest, they were placed opposite the harvested bundles of rice and represent a couple watching over the harvest. Possible traces of a blood patina. During the performance of rice rituals, the priest (Mumbaki) sometimes touched the Bul-ul figures with his hands, which he had previously dipped in the blood of a sacrificed pig. They are usually placed next to the doors of rice granaries along with wooden pigs. Text: Prof. Leah E.
