Headgear (Suklong)

Inventory number SA 34568
Headgear decorated with boar tusks and pearls. In the middle there is a pen with a depiction of an eagle. It was worn by men and was also used to carry personal items such as tobacco on their heads. It is worn on the back of the head and secured over the forehead with ribbons of black pearls. Various other forms are found in the Bontoc-Kankanaey area. Some elderly people in Bontoc and nearby villages still wear such headgear today at celebrations or special occasions. Text: Prof. Dr. Leah E. Abayao, Cordillera Studies Center, UP Baguio.
