Wooden container for sago (Malukung)

Inventory number SA 31373
Wooden container for sago from Banaue, decorated with a turtle head on both sides. Similar containers were used to store food that had been cooked using special Ifugao cooking methods for meat, legumes, and other vegetables. Containers of this type are now rarely used in the Ifugao households as they have gradually been replaced by ceramic, glass and plastic containers. Now and then, wood carvers make such objects to sell to tourists. Text: Prof. Dr. Leah E. Abayao, Cordillera Studies Center, UP Baguio.
