Game Box in Lacquer

Lacquered wooden game box decorated in gold. Inside it houses 143 mother-of-pearl tokens.

Board games of the 19th century incorporated oriental modalities, such as mikado, but the favorites were still the triplet and other traditional card games.

Where the taste for the Orient is best represented is in the luxurious boxes that were used to store the decks and tokens of various games, sometimes also made of exotic materials such as mother-of-pearl or ivory.

These small, easily transportable pieces were privileged recipients of oriental influences.
