Not-for-Profit Use

This database is a free-to-access, not-for-profit application or service built around aggregated data from supporting institutions. It does not use advertising revenue or sponsorship to help cover operational costs. It will not  use the data to provide a  for-profit service to users, nor will it use its dataset in a product that may later be commercialised.

Methodology

Several methods of collection were employed to create this online collection. We’d like to acknowledge some of the contributors and sources we tapped.

The Horniman Museum gave us express permission to use their images and were incredibly gracious and helpful in integrating their data with the site. The Horniman retains rights to the data and images presented here.

Early on we added the Victoria & Albert collection and the Pitt Rivers collection, after they graciously gave us permission to use their material, to the database by the painstaking process of copying and pasting. The Pitt-Rivers and the V&A retain their rights to the material. Later, with the assistance of a number of hearty grad students, we constructed by hand the materials of the British Museum where a Creative Commons license was indicated.

For the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we primarily used their excellent API, which was the clearest and most user friendly of data fetchers we used. We loved their integration of practical examples placed within the documentation.

We also used the Europeana database to populate the database with Creative Commons content. For the Museum of Ethnography Stockholm, we used a combined technique of scraping and api access to compile their collection of over a hundred objects.

Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum generously provided a detailed spreadsheet and permission to use their data and images as did the Vienna Museum of Ethnology. Both institutions retain their rights to the material.

All other items found on the site are being used under Creative Commons

Please note that we do not own any of the rights to the material. If you would like to republish them or reuse them in any way, please refer to the link to the original material provided on each item page and follow the guidance provided by the individual institution.
