Gathering Fruit

Fernando C. Amorsolo was born in Paco, Manila in 1892. He enrolled at the University of Philippines School of Fine Arts in 1914, training under European classical tradition. Amorsolo was an artist who painted in the realist style and as a result became not only admired but extremely influential. His treatment of the canvas and choice of subject matter is akin to the Barbazon school painters led by Francois Millet that privileges the rural Filipino landscape and people. He was also influenced by the style of Spain’s Diego de Silva Velasquez who was known for his paintings of simple objects and everyday people. His paintings thus tend to reflect the life of the rural Filipino at work, at the market and at play.
